Meet Kingswood's Employee of the Year 2016!

We are delighted to announce that our Employee of the Year 2016 is…

Myke Obasuyi!

Myke has been working at Kingswood for 8 years now, since graduating from the University of Manchester where he studied Philosophy and English. Having decided that he wanted a job that was a bit more hands on he’s grown from strength to strength as our amazing Chief Activity Instructor at Dearne Valley.

With huge congratulations on winning Kingswood’s ‘Employee of the Year’ award for 2016, we caught up with Myke to find out a bit more about him…

Meet Myke!

Q: How does it feel to be Kingswood’s Employee of the Year?
A: It is an absolute honour and a perfect way to finish off 2016. It’s definitely up there with my greatest achievements!

Q: What do you love most about your job?
A: The unique challenges that can crop up on a day to day basis and overcoming them with the team you work with.

Q: What is the average day like on centre?
A: The average day? There’s no such thing at Dearne Valley! The exciting thing about my job is that each day teaches me something new! It all starts and ends the same way… as part of a team.

Q: Did you go on any school trips when you were a student?
A: Only on a few sports tours, but never to an Activity Provider so this was a completely new experience to me when I started back in 2008

Q: What’s the funniest thing that’s happened since you’ve worked for Kingswood?
A: Here’s a funny, ‘things that kids say’ moment from the very first session I delivered at Dukeshouse Wood back in 2008. I had a group of 8 – 9 year olds playing the game ‘What time is it Mr Wolf’ and one of the girls who was on, insisted that we all addressed her as ‘Mrs Wolf’. One of the boys kept forgetting and she shouted at him, he shouted back, she shouted again… “You need to call me Mrs Wolf” she yelled once again. His reply was “well actually…it’s Miss Wolf. Face it you’re single and alone!”

Q: Is there any outdoor activity that you’re scared of?
A: Anything that involves water as it’s a well known fact I swim like a rock, wrapped up in lead and attached to a wrecking ball.

Q: What’s your favourite activity?
A: It would have to be Crate Stack as it’s a high energy session with plenty of time on task for participants. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to use cheesy jokes like “I hope y’all having a ‘Crate’ time”!

Q: What’s your favourite Kingswood centre?
A: This is a hard question as I’ve loved every centre I’ve worked at but it has to be Dearne Valley where i am currently at now. It’s unique, varied and full of potential!

Q: Tell us something surprising about yourself?
A: At the age of 16 I could run the 100 metres in 10 seconds…now it would probably be more like 25 seconds and I still wouldn’t reach the finish line
