Consideration for our visitors' safety runs through everything we do. Our centres are regularly inspected as part of our internal health and safety audit programme and we are always on the look-out for opportunities to improve what we do. We also work closely with outside experts in the fields of activity provision, facility maintenance and health and safety management to ensure we remain at the forefront of accepted good practice.
The benefits to young people of being exposed to managed risk are well known. A visit to a Kingswood centre will give students an opportunity to learn first-hand the thrill of the outdoors, with the comfort of knowing they are supported by our excellent safety standards.
Safe in our hands
Each of our centres has an on-call Duty Manager available to deal with any issues that may arise during your stay and to help solve problems. There is also a Duty First Aider available 24 hours a day, with a dedicated first aid room at their disposal.
All centres have had a comprehensive Fire Risk Assessment completed and operate to our Fire Safety Policy. All guests have the fire evacuation procedure explained to them on arrival, and will undertake a fire drill during their first evening on centre.
The security of our guests on a Kingswood centre is extremely important to us. All of our centres have well defined boundaries, often with security fencing, and our largest sites have security gates and CCTV at the main entrance. All staff, teachers and visitors are issued with security ID which must be worn at all times. For any further information on our Health & Safety standards, please contact your chosen centre or email@example.com
At Kingswood we understand that it is the quality, professionalism and enthusiasm of our staff teams that make your visit to us so successful. We invest in our staff so you see the return in quality delivery in a safe, fun environment. We recruit our staff from all over the world to ensure we have the perfect mix of skills to meet your needs. All our instructors go through a rigorous recruitment process Skype interviews, an extended assessment course consisting of observed teamwork and leadership exercises and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
Education is fundamental to everything we do at Kingswood and this extends through to our staff team. The majority of our instructors are completing a one-year Apprenticeship scheme – training whilst working to constantly improve the service delivered to you. All of our activity team complete a comprehensive two week induction programme that includes safeguarding training and Health & Safety qualifications as well as practical training in the fundamental skills of teaching and coaching young people. Following this induction, staff are trained in each of our activities and educational modules by experts in each of these fields. Some of the activities, such as archery, fencing and lifeguarding, will require our staff to pass National Governing Body awards. Others, such as climbing, abseiling, zipwire and high ropes, require staff to complete in-house training with an independent external assessment. For the remainder of our activities, our staff are trained and assessed to our in-house standards by our own experienced Lead Instructors.
All of our activity and learning programmes are operated in accordance with strict operating standards that define the minimum requirements for staff qualifications, supervision arrangements, equipment, facilities and appropriate clothing. Individual activities follow a defined session plan and all instructors are regularly observed to ensure they are complying with our safety standards and delivering a quality experience to our visitors. Operating standards also extend to cover our off-site programmes, such as excursions, beach visits and field studies groups. All instructors are trained in our detailed ‘off-site procedures’ which cover everything from boarding a coach to systems for remote supervision. All off-site venues are vetted for their suitability before being used, and all groups visiting an off-site venue take a first aid kit and mobile telephone with them.
Some higher risk activities, such as watersports, require the provider to prove they meet additional safety standards. The Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) issues licences to activity providers to operate activities that have been externally inspected to confirm they are safe, well organised and risk is being managed.
Details of the licenses Kingswood holds can be found here.
Kingswood has been inspected and we have proudly been awarded the LOtC Quality Badge for all of our operational centres. Information can be found here www.lotcqualitybadge.org.uk
