Finding Fin

A practical river study that combines environmental study and geography with ICT in a practical and engaging project.

Fin, the friendliest fish in perchdom is in a fix! As his river dries up it's a race against time to find him a new home. Students undertake an evaluation of a proposed river by taking measurements of width, depth and velocity at contrasting sites along the river's course.

Pupils use nets and identification charts to find out what is living in the river and if it is polluted. Will it be suitable, what sorts of friends will he make? What will he eat, and where will he play? Back at the ICT labs, pupils devise a poster showing the areas of the river most suitable for Fin to enjoy life with his friends.

This Discovery module is calibrated according to ability so that children of all capabilities can work through and complete the course.
