Immersive Language Courses
Kingswood is well renowned for its pioneering English in Action programmes which focus on exposing students to all types of learning methods. Years of experience has shown Kingswood that this way of teaching is fundamental to the development of English language skills. This theory concentrates on the child as an individual rather than a group, taking into account their own individual level of English, which is considered to be the least stressful for young learners.
English skills are taught in a variety of ways in different teaching styles and formats. Each day, in addition to formal grammar lessons, pupils develop through using a range of multimedia learning methods including course activity books and CD-ROM software in computer language labs. Young people also attend conversation classes ranging from basic speaking through to debating, so that students English skills are placed into context, with real-life project work.
Students have a selection of topics to choose from like designing a new world, a magazine, or an invention. These are then built upon with the students being part of the decision-making process. The final day culminates in a presentation in English to their class, reinforcing their language skills and building self esteem and confidence.
If students are to make the most of their English language lessons, it is important that they are placed into a class that matches their language skill level. English classes are split into three levels of language ability, Early Grade, Performer Grade, Fluent Grade. Students are tested on arrival in order to place them into their corresponding level.
Our teachers have a vital role to play in ensuring that students always have a positive learning experience in the classroom. They facilitate learning by creating interest in topics, feeding in key language structures and vocabulary, presenting clear spoken and written models of language, offering concise explanations. They monitor students’ learning, correcting when appropriate, offering encouragement and praise.
