Finding Fin

Environmental River Study

Study Time:

Half day fieldwork + optional follow up session in ICT lab.

Learning Objective:

By the end of this module pupils will be able to observe, identify and measure the main processes affecting the river.

Overview:

A practical river study that combines environmental study and geography with ICT in a practical and engaging project. Fin, the friendliest fish in perchdom is in a fix! As his river dries up it’s a race against time to find him a new home. Students undertake an evaluation of a proposed river by taking measurements of width, depth and velocity at contrasting sites along the river’s course. Pupils use nets and identification charts to find out what is living in the river and if it is polluted. Will it be suitable, what sort of friends will he make? What will he eat, and where will he play? Back at the ICT labs, pupils devise a poster showing the areas of the river most suitable for Fin to enjoy life with his friends.
