WJEC – AS & A2 Level Studies Geography
We’ve refreshed our geography courses in line with the latest A-level requirements, maximising the strengths of our existing studies and using new locations and technology where appropriate.
Studies are focussed on the ‘route to enquiry’ with students being encouraged to find out about the topic and location, making predictions before going out into the field and collecting data to prove or disprove these. Students will use geographical information systems as a key part of their follow-up work, displaying their own results and using secondary data to help analyse patterns. We then carry out follow-up sessions to find out if their predictions were correct, consider the study’s limitations and think about how they may have affected results.

Unit G1: Investigating Hydrological ChangeThe physical form of a river is studied including the individual features and landforms. These are related to the natural and human influences of the surrounding area on the river system and consequently linked to flooding patterns within the local area. Unit G2: Investigating Settlement Change – UrbanLand use mapping is used as a tool to collect data on distinctive areas within the town/city. Retail areas are then focused upon, allowing students to investigate consumers’ preferences and shopping habits in the CBD and the impact of regeneration projects. Unit G3B: Individual Research EnquiryGroups can be introduced to a range of fieldwork and data collection techniques depending on their individual requirements. These skills may be used to collect information from a selection of natural and human influenced environments close to the centre. Alternatively they may be transferred for use on projects closer to home. |
Unit G2: Investigating Settlement Change – RuralA selection of villages and other rural settlements are visited and analysed through the collection of primary data and evaluation of secondary sources. The issues of growth, decline and remoteness are investigated through research into service provision, sphere of influence and housing types. Unit G3: Coastal Landforms and ManagementStudents study a stretch of coast examining erosional and depositional landforms. Human actions as a result of natural processes are considered and in turn the management strategies implemented by humans are assessed in relation to their impact on the natural and build environments along the coastal landscape. |
