OCR- AS & A2 Level Studies Geography

We’ve refreshed our geography courses in line with the latest A-level requirements, maximising the strengths of our existing studies and using new locations and technology where appropriate.

Studies are focussed on the ‘route to enquiry’ with students being encouraged to find out about the topic and location, making predictions before going out into the field and collecting data to prove or disprove these. Students will use geographical information systems as a key part of their follow-up work, displaying their own results and using secondary data to help analyse patterns. We then carry out follow-up sessions to find out if their predictions were correct, consider the study’s limitations and think about how they may have affected results.

Unit F761: River Environments

Features and landforms associated with the processes of erosion and deposition are studied and analysed. Human impacts of infrastructure surrounding the river system are then considered with respect to issues of river management.

Unit F762: Managing Urban Change

Traditional CBD areas and regenerated sections within the city/town are visited and analysed. Land use mapping is completed to establish the range of functions found and any patterns that may occur. Increasing pressures from traffic congestion and areas of dereliction are considered with respect to environmental issues associated with urban change.

Unit F763: Woodland Ecosystem

The main components of a woodland ecosystem are examined through measurements of biotic & abiotic data. The extent of human influence and consequent change to the environment may also be explored in some areas.

Unit F761: Coastal Environments

An extended stretch of coastline is the focus for this study where students examine erosion and depositional processes and their associated landforms. Coastal protection methods and management strategies are then assessed in relation to their effectiveness against the natural processes that attack them.

Unit F762: Managing Rural Change

A selection of villages and other rural settlements are visited and analysed through the collection of primary data and evaluation of secondary sources. Range of functions found and opportunities that exist are investigated and related to factors leading to growth or decline in each of the rural areas visited.

Unit F763: Sand Dune Ecosystem

Sand dunes offer a unique environment but many are becoming threatened by the actions of humans. Measurements of biotic and abiotic factors determine both natural & anthropogenic influences on this fragile environment where succession from pioneer species to climax community can be analysed. This information is then used to evaluate existing, or suggest new ideas for management strategies.
