WJEC B – GCSE Geography
We understand the changing needs of schools to meet the requirements of the different exam boards, and we offer a range of courses that can be tailored to these needs.
Our centres are well-equipped to help schools carry out controlled assessment work, from schools who only wish to collect data to those who would prefer to complete the entire write-up while on site. We offer first-class ICT facilities providing excellent access for all students with 1:1 student/computer ratios. All staff are trained in the controlled assessment requirements and are ready to help teachers carry out assessments at every stage and if your school prefers to take a coursework-style approach, we’re more than happy to accommodate this, just as we have in the past.
Students focus on the ‘route to enquiry’, making predictions before going out into the field to collect data. We then carry out a follow-up session using the latest geographical information system technology, where students will analyse their results to find out whether their predictions were correct. We finish each module with a review of the study, encouraging students to question the study’s limitations and consider how they may have affected results.

Unit 1: Living in Residential PlacesService provision varies from place to place. Students may choose to focus on a rural or urban area (depending on contrasts to their home location) to create a case study comparison site of service provision. Goad mapping skills can be developed allowing students to identify and analyse patterns of service provision within the CBD. Unit 1: Landform Interactions (Rivers)Erosion, transportation and deposition all play a major role in shaping our river landscapes. Students identify these processes within the context of a small river where measurements of width and depth are taken to demonstrate the changing profile between two contrasting river sites. Unit 2: People, Work and DevelopmentFrom small fishing village to Victorian Seaside Resort; how and why has the primary source of income for some small coastal settlements changed throughout the past decade and what will the future bring? This is the key question that students investigate through examining past records of economic activity and comparing them to current data collected through their own land-use mapping activities. |
Unit 1: Weather and Climate Influences (Ecosystems)A local scale study investigating either a woodland or sand-dune based ecosystem. Students use measurements of the natural environment to establish human impacts on the area and form their own opinions regarding the effective management of the area. Unit 1: Landform Interactions (Coasts)Much of the British coastline is at risk of erosion, a natural process yet humans seek to stop it in some areas but not others. There is also evidence that human activities are increasing erosion rates in some places. Students visit a number of coastal sites to view a variety of coastal management strategies, identifying how natural processes are impacting on the ‘human world’. Unit 3: Geographical EnquiryProgrammes of study for this module will change each year in order to meet the criteria set by WJEC. Local fieldwork sites are well suited to studies from four of the possible topic areas: Built Environment, Service Provision, Coastal Management and Tourism Management. Controlled Assessment titles available at each centre are shown below. For more information on Controlled Assessment courses at Kingswood see our dedicated page. |
