OCR – AS & A2 Level Studies Biology
Our A-level biology courses closely follow the ‘How science works’ approach, focussing on developing practical skills while also covering the relevant specification content and we tailor our modules to meet the needs of each exam board.

Terrestrial ecologyThis skill based study concentrates on techniques used to assess the abundance and distribution of organisms within terrestrial ecosystems. Students will be introduced to a range of fieldwork techniques including different types of quadrats and the use of random and systematic sampling in a grassland habitat. Sampling invertebrates will also be considered including the use and limitations of the mark-release-recapture technique to assess population size. Rocky shore ecologyAs well as splashing about in rock pools, students will consider the range and diversity of life found on the rocky shore. Students will consider how different abiotic factors affect the distribution of organisms and use line and belt transects to investigate these patterns on the shore |
Freshwater ecologyStudents visit a number of sites on a local river sampling invertebrate populations and taking measurements of the physical and chemical properties of the river. This provides an opportunity to consider adaptations of organisms to their environment and the energetics of freshwater ecosystems. Sand dune successionStudents will be introduced to the theory of succession before visiting a sand dune system to see the different stages first hand. Quadrats and transects will be used to collect primary data from a range of locations within the dunes, including fixed dunes and climax community where possible. A range of abiotic factors will be measured including light levels, temperature and soil pH. |
Skills checklist
Different studies provide different opportunities to cover specification content. Below is a summary of the content covered by the four studies listed above; if you wish to cover content that is not listed our contact our centres to discuss your requirements.
OCR Practical Skills Assessments
Centres can provide equipment and locations for groups to carry out Practical Skills Assessments. Centres do not have access to the details of specific tasks, in line with the criteria set by OCR. If you wish to carry out a Practical Skills Assessment during your course contact the centre directly to inform them of your requirements.
